Arturo Fuente Don Carlos The Man’s 80th Eye of the Shark
When discussing the finest premium cigar brands from the Dominican Republic, Arturo Fuente is always at the top of the list. Today, the company is led by Carlos “Carlito” Fuente Jr., one of the most respected figures in the premium cigar industry and the grandson of Cuban immigrant Arturo Fuente, who began rolling cigars in Tampa, Florida, in 1912.
Four years before the Fuente family established their first factory in the Dominican Republic in 1980, Carlos Fuente Sr., a master blender of exceptional talent, created a cigar that would later become known as Don Carlos. Its blend has since served as the foundation for some of the brand’s most celebrated lines, including Fuente Fuente OpusX.
In 2015, to celebrate the 80th birthday of Don Carlos Fuente, Carlito Fuente crafted a special tribute blend based on the legendary Don Carlos recipe. It features a closely guarded selection of Dominican tobaccos, some aged for ten years, finished with a stunning African Cameroon wrapper displaying a rich chocolate-brown hue and the naturally sweet character for which Cameroon tobacco is renowned.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Carlito relied on instinct and decades of blending experience to subtly refine the original recipe, creating the Eye of the Shark—a unique Figurado that combines a traditional tapered shape with a box-pressed profile. The result is a cigar of medium to full body, offering exceptional complexity, elegance, and balance.
