Joya de Nicaragua Cuatro Cinco Reserva Especial Doble Robusto
Founded in 1968 in Estelí, Nicaragua, Joya de Nicaragua became the country’s first premium cigar manufacturer and has since grown into one of the most iconic names in a nation now recognized as a global powerhouse in cigar production. Its history is deeply intertwined with that of Nicaragua itself—from the close relationship between dictator Anastasio Somoza Debayle and his former classmate Richard Nixon, which helped make Joya de Nicaragua the official cigar of the White House, to the revolution and prolonged civil war that left the factory damaged and rebuilt multiple times.
Joya launched the Cuatro Cinco series (“Four Five” in Spanish) in 2013 to celebrate its 45th anniversary. Crafted from select Nicaraguan tobaccos, it was released as a limited edition. The line proved so successful that Joya decided to make it a permanent offering, and two years later introduced the Cuatro Cinco Reserva Especial, based largely on the original blend with a few intriguing refinements.
The binder was replaced with a Dominican-grown leaf, while the filler gained a ligero tobacco that had been aged for several years in oak barrels previously used for rum. The wrapper, a dark maduro leaf from Nicaragua’s Jalapa Valley, displays a rich bittersweet chocolate hue. In the Doble Robusto we sampled, featuring a box-pressed finish, dark chocolate was the dominant flavor throughout the first and second thirds, accompanied by generous notes of cinnamon, leather, and nuts.
