A Historic Yet Surprising Marvel Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos
Although Jaeger-LeCoultre has been offering this clock since 1928, it continues to surprise with its technology and innovation. It’s no wonder it’s considered the most coveted desk clock. The Atmos is a relatively simple time machine, displaying hours and minutes on a white ring dial with Roman numerals (there are also versions with a moon phase and more modern designs). The surprise lies in the fact that the clock is encased in a transparent box, with a frame made of natural brass or rhodium-plated brass.
The movement, or caliber, is far from human reach because it simply doesn’t require winding. Instead, it draws its energy from the ambient temperature changes. This is made possible by a sealed capsule containing a mixture of gases that expand and contract with each temperature fluctuation. Price: $10,000.
