Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, France
The grand château exudes the elegance of a miniature Palace of Versailles. Originally built in 1795, it was expanded over time with an underground cellar and an additional floor. Its impressive façade, magnificent entrance, and numerous stately rooms give it an unmistakably regal appearance. Located near the Gironde Estuary, whose moderating influence shapes the unique climate of Bordeaux, the estate is surrounded by its historic, mature vineyards.
The 1855 Bordeaux Wine Classification has long inspired debate, differing opinions, and countless discussions, yet it remains unchanged to this day. Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, ranked as a prestigious Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé), has preserved its centuries-old winemaking tradition through generations of ownership. Since 1941, the estate has belonged to the Borie family, now in its third generation of vintners.
The winery produces wines primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, while in exceptional vintages it may bottle a wine made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon—the undisputed king of Bordeaux grape varieties. Winemaking continues to rely on traditional concrete fermentation tanks, a classic method that has recently seen a revival in several wineries around the world, including Israel. The resulting wines remain true to the château’s reputation for outstanding quality.

Tasting Note – La Croix de Beaucaillou Saint-Julien
La Croix de Beaucaillou Saint-Julien is a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with a small proportion of Merlot. It displays a deep Bordeaux hue with vivid purple highlights. Rich and full-bodied, it offers generous flavors of ripe red fruit, plums, and black strawberries, elegantly wrapped in delicate, fragrant cigar smoke. The finish is long, layered, and complex.
According to the estate’s winemaker, the wine should be decanted before serving and enjoyed at 15°C (59°F). Even in Bordeaux, many producers now agree that the ideal serving temperature for a fine red wine is 15°C rather than the traditionally recommended 18°C.
