For those seeking a quality golf vacation in Cuba, the Varadero Peninsula is the only option, as it boasts the country’s only 18-hole golf course. However, Varadero offers more than just golf. This slender strip of land, embracing the turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean, is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world (ranked tenth according to “Traveller’s Choice”), featuring a 21-kilometer stretch of white sand. The golf courses, designed and crafted by architect Les Furber, are situated in the heart of the peninsula.
The luxurious colonial Xanadú Mansion hotel is located at the center of the golf site, surrounded by tropical gardens with coconut, papaya, banana, and other trees. The hotel has only six suites, and it includes a chef’s restaurant and a cigar and drink club. The four-story building was constructed in 1927 by the French-American millionaire Irene DuPont, a member of the renowned DuPont family.

The six luxurious guest suites are furnished in an old-fashioned colonial style, which is actually the secret to their charm. Surprisingly, the stay is affordably priced. Inside the suites, you’ll find antique furniture, art pieces, and ceilings paneled with wood brought from around the world. Each suite also has a large balcony overlooking the ocean. The gourmet restaurant on the ground floor serves local seafood and a menu that combines island flavors with French tradition. The wine cellar holds bottles from 18 different countries.
Finding a vacant room in this charming but tiny hotel won’t be easy, but it’s worth trying. If you visit during the last week of February, you’ll have twice the luck. Every February, Havana, the capital of Cuba, hosts the Habanos Festival, the world’s largest and most famous cigar event. The next festival will take place from February 18-24, 2014, just a two-hour drive from the hotel. This way, you can enjoy a pleasant morning of golf and an exciting evening of tasting fine cigars in a vibrant Cuban atmosphere.
