In a small vineyard on a hilltop, near the village of Morey Saint Denis in the Burgundy region, grapes are cultivated using biodynamic methods, on soil of clay, limestone, and marl. The vineyard belongs to a winery founded in 1863 by Jacques Monnier, a liqueur producer from the city of Dijon. In 1950, Jacques-Frederic Monnier, the founder’s grandson, decided to transfer the winery to other hands, but in 1978 it was Frederic Monnier, his son, who regained control of the winery and named it after his father. Today, it is a highly respected winery, specializing in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Its vineyard is relatively small, 3.6 hectares, producing no more than 1,500 bottles per year.
The year 2015 was exceptionally warm, resulting in lower grape yields, yet the winery managed to produce a wine from this vintage with outstanding characteristics. It is defined by its deep red fruit, black and red berries, strong scents of damp earth with minerality and green roots. A complex and elegant wine, one that only Burgundy can produce.
