A Love Story in Every Glass: Kunjani Wines, Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch, South Africa – There’s something magical about the journey from Pretoria to Cape Town aboard the iconic Blue Train. As it winds slowly down 1,200 meters through the vineyards of the Western Cape, every turn reveals a stunning view. The colors shift from light green to deep forest green, while morning mist hugs the mountains. Table Mountain stands tall in the distance. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime sight.
Among these rolling hills lies Kunjani Wines—a boutique winery built on love, vision, and world-class winemaking.
When Wine Brings People Together
The story of Kunjani began with a chance meeting. Paul Barth, who grew up around Germany’s famous Rieslings, met Pia Watermeyer, a South African businesswoman with a passion for hospitality. What started as a conversation turned into a connection. Over time, they decided to start something special together.
They didn’t just build a winery. They created a full experience: a modern tasting room, a fine restaurant, and luxury guesthouses scattered between the vines. Kunjani is a place where comfort, style, and wine come together.
A Modern Winery, Rooted in Tradition
The winery building is bold yet blends into the landscape. Its dark-gray design is built into a slope, so all production happens underground. This approach keeps the setting peaceful while supporting sustainability.
Leading the winemaking is Carmen Stevens, one of South Africa’s most respected winemakers. Carmen not only brings award-winning expertise—she also teaches Pia the craft. Both women believe that wine is a universal language—and that great wine can bring people together.

Kunjani’s Signature Rosé: Stolen Chicken Pia-Noir 2017
One wine, in particular, tells the Kunjani story with a smile. The Stolen Chicken Pia-Noir 2017 is named in honor of Pia, with a playful twist. It blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Merlot into a beautiful dry rosé.
Its color is soft, like the skin of a red onion. On the nose, you’ll find fresh strawberries, green apples, and juicy pears. It’s fruity but refined, with a clean finish that makes it perfect for any hour of the day.
One Couple. One Vision. One Winery.
Kunjani isn’t just a wine label—it’s the result of a shared dream. When you visit, stay, or sip a bottle at home, you become part of their story.
