As part of its celebrated Great Characters collection, luxury maison Montblanc continues its tradition of honoring cultural icons whose legacies transcend generations and borders. The Montblanc Great Characters Homage to Queen collection was created as a tribute to one of the most influential rock bands in history.
The collection comprises five writing instruments, each commemorating a different chapter in Queen’s extraordinary journey and decades of phenomenal global success.
The model featured here is dedicated to Queen’s fourth studio album, A Night at the Opera, which includes legendary songs such as Bohemian Rhapsody and Love of My Life. It is also the only Queen album to have appeared on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
A Limited Edition Inspired by 1975
The writing instrument was created in a limited edition of 1,975 fountain pens and 1,975 ballpoint pens, with the number commemorating the year in which A Night at the Opera was released.
The barrel features a bold black-and-white diamond pattern inspired by Freddie Mercury’s famous harlequin stage costume. Mercury drew inspiration for the close-fitting, diamond-patterned outfit from the Italian theatrical tradition of Commedia dell’arte, an artistic influence that also resonated with the theatrical and operatic character of Queen’s music.
Queen’s Four Members Immortalized
Stylized portraits of all four members of Queen are featured on the black PVD-coated cap, referencing the visual aesthetics of the band’s Queen II and Hot Space album covers.
The platinum-coated cone incorporates a design reminiscent of the volume and tone control knobs on guitarist Brian May’s famous electric guitar, while the album’s title is engraved on the cone ring.
A Tribute to Freddie Mercury
The fountain pen’s nib is crafted from solid Au 750 gold, hand-finished with a rhodium coating. It is decorated with a silhouette of Freddie Mercury, a reference to the cover of Queen’s Made in Heaven, released four years after Mercury’s death and featuring some of his final vocal recordings.
