Picolit is one of the celebrated grape varieties of Friuli, in northeastern Italy, and is particularly associated with the region’s prestigious sweet wines.
With this innovation, Italy’s traditional grappa entered a new era, moving from its rustic origins toward the world of sophisticated premium spirits.
Traditionally, grappa is produced from grape pomace – the skins, seeds and other grape material remaining after pressing during the winemaking process – often using material from several grape varieties.
Nonino changed the perception of grappa by focusing on a single, distinguished grape variety, seeking to preserve and express its individual aromatic identity.
The result was Grappa Cru Monovitigno Picolit, a spirit closely associated with the transformation of grappa into a refined product capable of expressing the character of a particular grape variety and its origins.
The Nonino family has continued this tradition across generations, with the women of the family playing a prominent role in developing and representing the distillery.
Careful selection of the grapes and pomace is essential to preserving the natural freshness and aromatic qualities of Picolit.
In the glass, the grappa is crystal clear and transparent.
Initially, its aromas are delicate and restrained, gradually opening to reveal distinctive notes of apple and spice, including an intriguing touch reminiscent of freshly ground white pepper.
Despite its formidable 50% ABV, the texture is surprisingly silky, gently caressing the tongue rather than overwhelming it.
A powerful yet elegant grappa that demonstrates how finesse, varietal character and considerable strength can coexist in the same glass.
