The Graf von Faber-Castell Pen of the Year 2023 from the German luxury pen company is inspired by ancient Egypt, including its gods, Egyptian mythology, and the achievements of Egyptian culture throughout a long history of around 3,000 years.
The fountain pen features an 18-carat Magnum gold nib and a body made of metal with a matte finish and diamond-like carbon coating. It stands out with its black color, reflecting the fact that ancient Egypt was referred to by its inhabitants as “Kemet” (“Black Land”), a reference to the dark color of the fertile soil in the Nile region and delta, resulting from the river’s frequent flooding.

The pen’s cap is adorned with an engraving resembling a lotus flower, which represents creation and rebirth according to Egyptian mythology. Above it, a 24-carat gold engraving at the top depicts the “Eye of Horus” (a concept from Egyptian mythology symbolizing protection, completeness, and power). On the black body, the names of twelve Egyptian gods and goddesses are engraved in hieroglyphs. Near the nib, the grip section features a 24-carat gold-plated metal ring and bright blue rings inspired by the mask of King Tutankhamun. The pen’s cap is designed after the bust of Nefertiti, the wife of King Akhenaten, who was the father of Tutankhamun.
The pen was released in a limited edition of 375 numbered pieces. Price: €5,800.
