Some say that the cask makes the whisky. There is certainly some truth in that, although it is not the whole story.
Whisky, like other distilled spirits, retains characteristics derived from its raw materials and production process. At The Macallan, however, exceptional oak casks have long been regarded as one of the defining elements behind the house’s quality and distinctive character – an essential part of the philosophy that has made Macallan one of the most recognized names in single malt whisky.
The Macallan Whisky Master and his team examined more than 500 casks before making their final selection. Their attention focused particularly on sherry-seasoned oak – the foundation of The Macallan Oscuro.
Part of the 1824 Collection, named after the year The Macallan was founded, Oscuro showcases the character of whisky matured in carefully selected Spanish and American oak casks seasoned with sherry.
“Oscuro” means dark in Spanish, and the name is certainly appropriate. The whisky displays a deep color reminiscent of a rich, dark and sweet sherry.
But the influence of the sherry-seasoned casks goes far beyond color. They contribute a remarkable spectrum of aromas and flavors: red berries, abundant vanilla, toasted malt, roasted nuts and yeasty notes.
This is a complex whisky, seemingly filled with countless layers of aroma and flavor, while fragrant smoke surrounds the senses.
At 46.5% ABV, Oscuro is a powerful single malt, rich and deep, yet it combines that intensity with a surprisingly soft mouthfeel.
It is a seemingly unlikely marriage of strength and delicacy – yet Oscuro manages to deliver both.
Some professionals recommend adding a teaspoon of water to each glass to open up the whisky’s aromas and flavors – preferably Scottish water, perhaps? We chose not to.
And by the way, members of the unofficial Macallan enthusiasts’ club once had another treat waiting for them at Ben Gurion Airport: a small but luxurious lounge inside the cigar shop, where travelers could sample Macallan expressions before boarding their flight.
After an experience like that, getting on the plane with a smile was almost inevitable.
