Impressive both in presentation and character, The Macallan Rare Cask Black is a whisky that stands apart from the distillery’s more familiar expressions.
Careful maturation in sherry-seasoned oak, combined with a meticulous selection of individual casks, gives this whisky a distinctive personality and places it among the more unusual expressions from the historic Speyside distillery.
Despite the name “Black,” the whisky is not actually black. Its color is better described as a deep, dark amber, reminiscent of autumn leaves.
On the nose, Rare Cask Black delivers a rich spectrum of aromas wrapped in fragrant smoke. There are suggestions of a fine cigar box, accompanied by dried fruits such as dates and figs with honey.
At 48% ABV, the whisky carries considerable strength, yet the alcohol integrates beautifully with its rich aromas and flavors.
A small amount of water – perhaps a teaspoon per glass – is recommended to help open the whisky and reveal additional layers of aroma and flavor.
