When discussing a luxury automobile with breathtaking styling, a V12 engine, and a record-breaking pedigree, mentioning the price almost seems beside the point. Yet in 1932, when Auburn introduced its 160 Speedster series, the car combined a 12-cylinder engine with a price tag of just $975.
That figure was considerably lower than what buyers might have expected for such an automobile at the time, and was closer to the price of a more mainstream V8-powered car from a manufacturer such as Chrysler.
Today, examples from the series command around $900,000. This particular Auburn is exceptionally rare: it is one of only 14 examples produced and one of just five believed to remain in existence.
Its owner, who has kept the car for more than half a century, claims that it was once owned by legendary Hollywood actor Clark Gable. It is certainly an intriguing addition to the car’s history—although no documentation has surfaced to substantiate the claim.
