The story of Donnafugata dates back to the mid-19th century, when the Ranci family began producing wine in the region. A major turning point came in 1983, when Giacomo and Gabriella Ranci decided to focus on crafting distinctive, high-quality wines using indigenous Sicilian grape varieties alongside innovative winemaking techniques.

This commitment to innovation has established Donnafugata as one of Sicily’s leading wineries and earned it international recognition. The estate produces an extensive portfolio, ranging from aromatic white wines to rich, complex reds.

Among its flagship wines is Mille e Una Notte, a dry red wine produced primarily from Nero d’Avola, complemented by small proportions of Petit Verdot and Syrah. The wine is aged for approximately 12 months in small French oak barrels, followed by about two additional years of bottle aging before release. It offers an expressive bouquet of black berries, vanilla, and cigar-box tobacco aromas, with a full-bodied yet beautifully balanced palate and a remarkably long finish. At the winery, it sells for approximately €70 per bottle.
