Castello di Amorosa: Napa Valley’s Tuscan Wine Castle

Castello di Amorosa in Napa Valley, a spectacular Tuscan-style castle winery with historic cellars and Il Barone Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.

Located near the picturesque town of Calistoga, at the northern end of Napa Valley, Castello di Amorosa is one of the most unusual destinations on California’s wine landscape.

The winery takes the form of an authentic recreation of a 13th-century Tuscan castle, meticulously constructed over nearly 15 years by winemaker and visionary Dario Sattui. The story of Castello di Amorosa grew out of Sattui’s dream of creating an architectural masterpiece that would complement the art of winemaking.

To achieve this remarkable level of authenticity, bricks, antique wooden beams and hand-forged ironwork were brought from Europe, while traditional construction techniques inspired by the medieval period were employed throughout the project.

A Journey Back to Medieval Tuscany

What makes Castello di Amorosa particularly memorable is its immersive experience. Visitors do not simply come to taste fine Napa Valley wines – they are transported into another era.

Visually, the castle is breathtaking. Its architectural features include a moat, drawbridge, imposing defensive towers, a sun-drenched courtyard and a magnificent Great Hall decorated with elaborate hand-painted frescoes.

Beneath the castle lies another world: a cool, atmospheric labyrinth of vaulted wine cellars where wines mature in oak barrels. The dimly lit underground passageways create an evocative setting that feels far removed from modern-day California.

Together, the architecture, cellars and wines visit Castello di Amorosa one of Napa Valley’s most distinctive wine experiences.

Il Barone Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
Il Barone Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

The estate’s flagship wine is Il Barone Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, a powerful expression of Cabernet Sauvignon that showcases the quality and character of Napa Valley fruit.

The aromatic profile is rich and expressive, revealing blackberry, ripe cassis, hints of cigar box, dark chocolate and subtle truffle notes.

On the palate, Il Barone is full-bodied and generous, supported by elegant, velvety tannins and a firm, well-defined structure. A long, persistent finish leaves a memorable impression.

Balanced and classically styled, Il Barone Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine built for aging, with the structure and concentration to evolve beautifully over time while continuing to reveal new layers in the glass.
