Between Diplomacy and Cigars: Cigar Lounges in Washington

Shelly’s Back Room
In a city where diplomacy is the most spoken language after English, there’s the greatest chance to enjoy a cigar in the company of those who interact directly with world leaders. Washington’s cigar lounges offer such opportunities.

Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States, was founded and is located in the District of Columbia (hence the “D.C.”), which is neutral and separate from the states that make up the United States. Washington is a union of two cities that once stood along the Potomac River—Georgetown and Alexandria (which later returned to the state of Virginia, to which it had originally belonged). George Washington, the first President of the United States, after whom the capital is named, grew tobacco on the family estate, Mount Vernon, but was never seen enjoying a cigar.

The central institutions of all three branches of government are located in the city—the Capitol (Legislative Branch), the White House (Executive Branch), and the Supreme Court (Judicial Branch). Major financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank are also based here, along with the headquarters of U.S. security agencies like the FBI, the Pentagon, and the CIA. In addition, the capital hosts more than 175 embassies and consulates, making it, arguably, the city with the highest concentration of diplomats, statesmen, and politicians in the world.

During the day, the most recommended activity is a visit to one (or several) of the 19 impressive museums of the Smithsonian Institution, which are open to the public for free. These include the National Air and Space Museum, museums of art, natural history, history, international espionage, and the Holocaust Museum. At night, the city offers every type of entertainment imaginable—most of it exclusive—ranging from restaurants and bars to plays and performances, jazz shows, and nightclubs. A love for life’s pleasures has characterized the diplomats and statesmen who have filled the capital’s institutions for centuries, and cigars have always been, and continue to be, a common companion in many of their social gatherings.

Shelly’s Back Room

Shelly’s Back Room

Just a stone’s throw from the lush lawns of the White House, approximately 400 meters away, lies Shelly’s Back Room—a “American Taverna,” as its founders described it at the turn of the century. The interior design is rich in wooden elements on the walls and furniture, giving it the feel of a rustic Greek cabin. However, the prominent U.S. flag proudly displayed on the central wall, along with illustrations, photographs, and heavy leather armchairs, instantly transports you to the heart of 1960s America.

The design is eclectic and unpretentious, yet warm and inviting. A sophisticated smoke extraction system ensures the air remains clean, even for non-cigar enthusiasts. Nearly an entire wall is dedicated to private lockers for customers to store their cigars. By law, the establishment is required to sell cigars in order to maintain its cigar-friendly status. Thus, private locker holders must purchase at least $150 worth of cigars from Shelly’s cigar menu each year.

The selection of cigars available for purchase is extensive, featuring top brands from Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. The array of alcoholic beverages to complement the cigars includes all imaginable types—wines, beer, champagne, rum, cognac, gin, and an extensive variety of whiskies from around the world. For those visiting on an empty stomach, a full food menu is available, offering everything from authentic burgers and gourmet sandwiches to soups and seafood, all delivered to lounge guests via DoorDash.

TG Cigar Lounge

TG Cigar Lounge

Near the Washington Convention Center and Mount Vernon, named after the family estate of the first president, lies TG Cigar, a cigar shop that, if judged by its exterior, might not immediately inspire confidence. However, beyond the door awaits guests a well-maintained humidor stocked with leading lines from well-known cigar brands such as Oliva, Don Pepin, and Drew Estate from Nicaragua, La Flor Dominicana and Arturo Fuente from the Dominican Republic, as well as boutique brands less familiar to the general public. Cigars not included in the shop’s portfolio can also be ordered by phone.

Inside the store is a cigar lounge for a relaxed stay, and during the summer, guests are invited to the patio for the perfect experience. The shop’s founder, Ms. Nagast Sawit, an Ethiopian-born businesswoman, manages TG Cigar as the culmination of her life’s work, which is reflected in the personalized service provided to every customer.
