A Boutique Hotel at the Foot of the Andes
The story of Casa Silva began in 1887, when French immigrant Emile Bouchon arrived in Chile’s Colchagua Valley, about 150 kilometers south of the capital, Santiago.
Bouchon had acquired extensive winemaking experience in Bordeaux, France, and brought with him vines of French origin that he planted in his new home in Chile.
At the beginning of the 20th century, he began producing and bottling wine. Around the same period, he built the family residence — a large house inspired by the traditional Spanish hacienda style, with several wings arranged around a stone-paved interior courtyard complete with a fountain, trees and climbing plants.
Six generations of Emile Bouchon’s descendants lived in this house. Since the middle of the 20th century, the family has carried the Silva name following the marriage of Bouchon’s granddaughter.
The Rise of Colchagua Valley
Over the years, Colchagua Valley has become one of Chile’s most celebrated wine regions, particularly renowned for its red wines.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Malbec and, above all, Carménère thrive here, benefiting from the distinctive conditions of Chile’s Central Valley.
In 1997, a new generation of the family decided to take the business to another level. Additional vineyards were planted and wine production was significantly expanded under the Casa Silva name.
Particular attention was given to Carménère, the grape variety that has become closely associated with Chilean wine. Casa Silva’s wines went on to receive considerable international recognition, helping establish the estate among the prominent names in modern Chilean winemaking.
Sleeping in a Historic Hacienda
The family’s historic residence has since been transformed into a boutique hotel, offering guests the opportunity to stay in an authentic Chilean hacienda surrounded by vineyards and the beautiful landscape of the Colchagua Valley.
The historic house was carefully renovated while preserving its original structure and warm family atmosphere. White walls, soaring ceilings supported by exposed wooden beams and extensive use of natural wood maintain the character of the original residence.
Modern comforts have been discreetly added, including private bathrooms, televisions and Wi-Fi.
The property also features a restaurant specializing in local cuisine, including grilled meats and traditional slow-cooked dishes — a natural match for the estate’s red wines.
Wine, Horses and Polo
Wine is only part of the Casa Silva experience.
The Silva family also has a longstanding passion for horses, giving guests another way to experience the estate and surrounding countryside.
Alongside vineyard tours and wine tastings, visitors can explore the property on horseback or by bicycle. Those looking for something particularly distinctive can even take polo lessons.
