Château Cheval Blanc is a legendary Saint-Émilion estate renowned for its distinctive Cabernet Franc-led wines, exceptional terroir, silky elegance and extraordinary aging potential.

A Legendary Estate in Saint-Émilion

Château Cheval Blanc is situated in the prestigious Saint-Émilion wine region of Bordeaux. The fascinating history of the estate stretches back centuries, while the modern property took shape during the 19th century.

Its name, meaning “White Horse,” is traditionally associated with an old inn in the area that once served travelers passing through the region.

The estate occupies an exceptional location close to the border between Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. Its vineyards feature an unusual mosaic of gravel, clay and sandy soils, creating distinctive conditions particularly well suited to Cabernet Franc and Merlot – the two grape varieties that form the backbone of Cheval Blanc.

The Distinctive Character of Cabernet Franc

For decades, Château Cheval Blanc held the prestigious status of Premier Grand Cru Classé A, the highest tier of the Saint-Émilion classification. The estate withdrew from the 2022 classification process, but its reputation remains firmly established among the great wines of Bordeaux and the world.

One of Cheval Blanc’s defining characteristics is its remarkable use of Cabernet Franc. While Cabernet Sauvignon dominates many of the great wines of Bordeaux’s Médoc region, Cabernet Franc traditionally plays a leading role at Cheval Blanc.

Depending on the vintage, it can account for a significant proportion of the final blend, contributing freshness, elegance, floral aromas and extraordinary aromatic complexity. Combined with the richness and suppleness of Merlot, it creates the distinctive balance that has made Cheval Blanc famous.

The estate is owned by Bernard Arnault and Baron Albert Frère’s family, who have invested extensively in preserving its heritage while maintaining exceptionally high standards of viticulture and winemaking.

Château Cheval Blanc – An Iconic Collectors’ Wine

The estate’s flagship wine, Château Cheval Blanc, is produced primarily from Cabernet Franc and Merlot.

It is renowned for its remarkable balance and aromatic complexity, revealing layers of red fruit, spices, flowers and subtle mineral notes, all wrapped in an exceptionally refined and silky texture.

The finest vintages combine concentration with elegance and possess extraordinary aging potential, allowing the wines to evolve beautifully over many decades.

Legendary vintages such as 1947, 1982, 2000 and 2010 are among the most coveted wines in the world and remain highly sought after by collectors.
