Château Cheval Blanc. Beauty and Balance in Saint-Émilion

Château Cheval Blanc
Château Cheval Blanc combines Cabernet Franc and Merlot to create some of Bordeaux’s most refined and sought-after wines.

Château Cheval Blanc stands as one of the most prestigious estates in Saint-Émilion. Its rich history dates back to the 18th century, when the land was acquired by the Ducasse family. The estate’s name—“the white horse”—is believed to derive from a nearby roadside inn that once served travelers and horse-drawn carriages.

Uniquely positioned on the border between the gravel soils of Pomerol and the clay-limestone terroir of Saint-Émilion, the vineyard benefits from an exceptional geological composition. This rare combination of gravel, clay, and iron-rich subsoils creates ideal conditions for cultivating Cabernet Franc and Merlot—the two grape varieties that form the backbone of the estate’s wines.

Château Cheval Blanc holds the prestigious Premier Grand Cru Classé A status—the highest classification in Saint-Émilion—and has consistently maintained this elite ranking. The estate is particularly renowned for elevating Cabernet Franc to a leading role in its blends. While Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the wines of the Médoc, at Cheval Blanc it is Cabernet Franc that takes center stage, often comprising more than 50% of the blend. This results in wines of remarkable elegance, freshness, and aromatic complexity, with distinctive floral notes.

Today, the estate is owned by Bernard Arnault (CEO of LVMH) and Albert Frère, the late Belgian industrialist, both of whom upheld uncompromising standards of excellence in production.
