Whether your passion lies in Baroque art, medieval architecture, or the layered history of one of the most influential empires to ever shape Europe and the Mediterranean basin—or whether you’re drawn to explore the epicenter of Catholicism while visiting the only country located entirely within a city, and perhaps delve into the story of the world’s oldest Jewish community—all roads, as ever, lead to Rome.
Italy’s capital offers an abundance of fascination in all these realms. From centuries-old landmarks like St. Peter’s Basilica—among the most sacred sites in Christianity—to the iconic ruins of the Colosseum, the world’s most famous amphitheater, and the ancient luxury of the Baths of Caracalla, not to mention the legendary Circus Maximus, Rome tells a story of power, leisure, and cultural richness. And woven through this tale is the Roman Empire’s deep-rooted wine culture, which laid the foundation for Europe’s own vinous traditions.
This passion for la dolce vita has endured. The vibrant spirit of Rome’s aristocratic past still pulses through the city’s streets, and perhaps that’s why Rome remains one of the rare cities in the Western world where a man holding a cigar isn’t seen as an indulgent elitist—but rather greeted with an approving smile. In fact, the Eternal City boasts several noteworthy cigar lounges, and here we’ll explore the finest among them.

Smoking in Rome Cigar Club
In 1999—the same year Cigar Aficionado magazine took off in full swing—the Cigar Club Association of Italy was founded with a remarkably similar ethos: to promote and share the love of the cigar, that noble indulgence which invites us to pause amidst our busy lives, unwind, and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow aficionados.
Smoking in Rome is a private club officially recognized as a Habanos Lounge—a refined concept introduced by Habanos S.A. to elevate the cigar experience. According to the club’s charter, each member pays an annual fee that grants them a range of privileges, most notably access to exclusive members-only events and private launches of rare Cuban cigars, paired with gourmet Italian cuisine.

Members also have the option to rent a private humidor locker, ensuring their prized collection is stored in optimal conditions. Occasional visitors aren’t left out—day passes are available, which include entry to the lounge and a complimentary drink, allowing even a brief stay in Rome to be savored with style.
The lounge is curated under the discerning eye of Armando Cappuccio, handpicked by the club’s founders—Baccini, Cangemi, and Graziano. The space is a love letter to Cuba, elegantly designed in classic Cuban style and adorned with rare collectibles from the island: vintage photographs, unique and antique humidors, historic cigar jars, bands, and more—each piece whispering stories of Havana’s golden age.

Cigars are not sold on-site, in keeping with the lounge’s exclusive nature. However, aficionados can stock up nearby at Giuseppe Capolunghi’s shop in Piazza Barberini or at Sansone, located on Viale Giulio Cesare.
Entry to the lounge requires an elegante dress code—jackets are mandatory for gentlemen, in the spirit of refined indulgence.

Rome Cavalieri Hotel
The Cavalieri Hotel, part of the prestigious Waldorf Astoria collection, has earned numerous awards and accolades, including being recognized as Italy’s best business hotel and one of the finest in Europe. Perched on the serene Monte Mario hilltop, it offers an unrivaled panoramic view of the ancient heart of Rome, including its iconic landmarks.
The hotel is also home to La Pergola, Rome’s only three-Michelin-star restaurant, helmed by the celebrated chef Heinz Beck. Accompanying the exquisite dishes is Marco Reitano, a renowned and highly skilled sommelier who has curated two exceptional wine lists—one showcasing wines from around the world, and the other dedicated exclusively to Italy’s finest offerings. Reitano oversees one of the most magnificent wine cellars, housing tens of thousands of bottles, including rare treasures like Pétrus 1945 and Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1922, alongside Italian wine masterpieces from regions like Piedmont, featuring Barbaresco and Barolo.
Adjacent to the restaurant is the hotel’s exclusive cigar lounge, a favorite retreat for Chef Beck himself, where he unwinds from the day’s demands. The lounge boasts a rare collection of glassworks by late 19th-century French artist Émile Gallé, antique classic furniture, and 19th-century art adorning the walls. The drinks menu spans an impressive 25 pages, offering a curated selection of drinks to pair with your cigar. Among its rare gems are pre-Revolution Valdespino Jerez Cuban rum, the legendary Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve Bourbon, and the mythic Port Ellen 35-year-old single malt (priced at €380 per glass). For the ultimate indulgence, the Hennessy Ellipse cognac (priced at €650 per glass) is available. The lounge’s humidor showcases the finest Cuban brands, and guests have the liberty to bring their own cigars.
