The Winery That Helped Put Maremma on the Wine Map – Fattoria Le Pupille
In the Maremma wine region of Tuscany, where rolling hills meet the Mediterranean coast, lies Fattoria Le Pupille. The estate is inseparably associated with Elisabetta Geppetti, one of the most influential women in Italian wine.
Geppetti took charge of the estate when she was only twenty years old and transformed it from a small local winery into one of Tuscany’s most highly regarded wine estates. Her determination, combined with a profound understanding of Maremma’s distinctive terroir, turned Fattoria Le Pupille into a symbol of innovation, quality and precision, while maintaining a deep respect for tradition.

Much of the estate’s character comes from its remarkable terroir. The vineyards’ proximity to the sea, mineral-rich soils and favorable climate create excellent conditions for cultivating both indigenous and international grape varieties.
Respect for nature plays a central role in the estate’s philosophy. Fattoria Le Pupille employs sustainable viticultural practices designed to allow the vines to develop in harmony with their surroundings. Sangiovese accounts for around 70 percent of the vineyards, complemented by classic Bordeaux varieties and a smaller selection of white grapes.
What also distinguishes Le Pupille is the personality and vision behind it. Elisabetta Geppetti is closely involved throughout the winemaking process, from vineyard to bottle, and her influence can be felt in wines characterized by elegance, refinement and a distinctive sense of place.

The estate’s flagship wine is Saffredi, a powerful and impressive blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot.
In the glass, Saffredi reveals a deep, dark purple color. The nose offers layers of complex aromas, including black cherries, cassis and dark chocolate, accompanied by subtle notes of Mediterranean herbs.
On the palate, the wine is complex yet polished, with a firm and beautifully structured body. Flavors of ripe dark berries, vanilla and roasted espresso fill the palate before unfolding into an exceptionally long finish that conveys both luxury and precision.
Saffredi is more than simply a great wine. It is an authentic expression of Maremma’s terroir and the uncompromising passion and vision of the woman who helped transform this corner of Tuscany into one of Italy’s most exciting wine regions.
