Clos de Chillon – Switzerland
A magnificent medieval fortress stands on a small peninsula along the eastern shore of Lake Geneva. Although its exact age remains uncertain, Chillon Castle has become one of Switzerland’s most iconic landmarks. Beyond serving as a fascinating museum, the fortress is also home to a unique winery.
Hundreds of oak barrels line the castle’s historic cellars, where visitors are guided by wine experts who recount the rich history of the estate and explain the significance of Switzerland’s most celebrated native grape variety—Chasselas.
This grape forms the foundation of the winery’s production, sourced from approximately 12 hectares (120 dunams) of vineyards surrounding the castle and overlooking Lake Geneva. Chasselas produces elegant white wines that express a distinctly Swiss character and serves as the basis for the country’s renowned Fendant wines—versatile dry whites that pair beautifully with a wide range of cuisine.
The Wine: Clos de Chillon Grand Cru – AOC Lavaux
A dry white wine with a golden hue and delicate green reflections. The bouquet opens with fresh lemon zest, followed by harmonious layers of anise and subtle vanilla. Well-balanced and structured, it offers a rich yet elegant palate, lively acidity, and a long finish with a gentle touch of sweetness.
Recommended serving temperature: 8–10°C.
