Henderson’s motorcycle factory was acquired in 1911 by Ignaz Schwinn, the brand still known today for its bicycles. The Four is a rare model, considered a super motorcycle in its time. Its 1.3-liter engine produced 40 horsepower and exceptionally high torque, enabling it to cruise in third gear from eight miles per hour up to one hundred. The Henderson was faster than most motorcycles and cars of the era, making it a natural choice for police forces. 1931 was the last production year, as the factory closed due to the Great Depression in America. One of the most enthusiastic fans of the Henderson Four is television personality Jay Leno, who owns one of these motorcycles. The bike shown here was recently sold for $95,000.
