The Mount Gay distillery is named after a mountain in the northern part of Barbados. However, there is a story behind this name. The mountain and its surrounding agricultural area were originally owned by a man named John Sober, who inherited a small distillery on Mount Gilboa in the Saint Lucy region of Barbados in 1703. Years later, the Sober family hired the services of Sir John Gay Alleyne, a fourth-generation member of a local family, to usher in a new era for the distillery. His innovations and achievements were so successful that the Sober family renamed the distillery in his honor, and the world was introduced to a new name with a pedigree of excellence: Mount Gay.

Barbados, an island nation in the Caribbean, is characterized by a typical tropical climate and is abundant in sugarcane fields, the primary raw material for rum production. Vast areas of sugarcane fields on the island are owned by the Mount Gay distillery, which is the main reason the distillery has been operating continuously for over 300 years.

Tasting: Mount Gay XO Triple Cask Blend Rum. A slightly sweet rum with a medium body. Full of honey and butter aromas and flavors. The alcohol strength, 43%, blends well with the delicate flavors. It works as a base for cocktails as well as for sipping directly, with hints of white chocolate and ripe raisins. A great drink for summer.
