Where Sassicaia Was Born – Tenuta San Guido

In the heart of the Bolgheri wine region, along Tuscany’s Etruscan Coast, lies Tenuta San Guido – the estate where the legendary Sassicaia was born. It is a place steeped in history, prestige and revolution.

The estate dates back to the 19th century, while its transformation into one of Italy’s most celebrated wine producers is inseparably linked to Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. In the 1940s, the Marquis dreamed of producing a wine inspired by the great Bordeaux wines he admired, using Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.

Initially, the wine was produced exclusively for family consumption, as leading winemakers of the period found it difficult to believe that a Tuscan wine produced outside the traditional Chianti Classico region could achieve international success.

History proved otherwise. The first Tenuta San Guido wine to be commercially released was Sassicaia from the 1968 vintage, which reached the market in 1971. It became one of the wines associated with the rise of the “Super Tuscan” movement and helped rewrite the rules of Italian winemaking.

Sassicaia demonstrated the extraordinary potential of international grape varieties in Tuscany and paved the way for a new generation of groundbreaking Italian wines.

Today, Tenuta San Guido follows a meticulous approach to viticulture, taking full advantage of the estate’s distinctive gravel-rich soils, often compared with those found in Bordeaux. The Mediterranean climate provides an exceptional combination of warmth and freshness, while every stage of production is managed with uncompromising attention to quality.

Sassicaia, the estate’s flagship wine, is a masterpiece. In the glass, it displays a deep, dark ruby-red color. The nose reveals complex aromas of black cherry, dark forest berries, green pepper and fresh leather, accompanied by nuances of earth and even the evocative aroma of a fine cigar.

On the palate, Sassicaia is full-bodied and structured yet remarkably elegant, with rich, silky tannins. Flavors of ripe dark berries mingle with chocolate, licorice and sweet spices, leading to a long, powerful and persistent finish.

Sassicaia is more than a great wine; it is a myth in a bottle, embodying the spirit of revolution, vision and Italian luxury.
