Karthäuserhof, Germany
Nestled in Germany’s Mosel Valley, surrounded by rolling green hills and steep vineyards, Karthäuserhof looks like a picture-perfect landscape. Its collection of traditional German buildings, with gray pitched roofs and countless windows, has been home to one of Germany’s most historic wineries for nearly 700 years. Often referred to as the “cradle of German Riesling,” the estate benefits from an exceptional vineyard site where, as locals like to say, “Mother Nature smiles upon every sweet white grape.”

A Legacy Born in a Monastery
Like many of Germany’s oldest wineries, Karthäuserhof began as a modest monastic vineyard. In 1335, monks of the Carthusian Order, from whom the estate takes its name, planted vines and began producing wine within their monastery.
Roughly 450 years later, the monastery became property of the French government. In 1811, ownership of the winery passed to the Behler family, whose descendants have preserved its remarkable heritage ever since. Today, Albert Behler, a member of the family, continues the tradition, crafting the estate’s celebrated Riesling wines.

The Greatness of German Riesling
No discussion of German Riesling is complete without mentioning the extraordinary terroir that defines it. Riesling vines thrive in the Mosel’s mineral-rich slate soils and on dramatic, steep slopes. In many vineyards, the vines appear to grow directly among exposed red, gray, and black stones, with very little visible soil surrounding them. These unique growing conditions produce wines renowned for their elegance, precision, and vibrant minerality—qualities that are beautifully expressed in the vineyards of Karthäuserhof.

Flagship Wine

The estate’s flagship wine is a luscious sweet white Riesling that reveals new layers of flavor with every sip. Tropical fruit notes of pineapple and guava mingle with pear and clementine, wrapped in delicate floral aromas and supported by a long, persistent mineral finish. It is a wine that perfectly demonstrates how an ancient winery continues to produce wines with a bright future.
