St. Jodern Kellerei, Switzerland
The Valais region of Switzerland at its very best. Perched at an elevation of 1,100 meters (3,609 feet) above sea level, one of Europe’s highest wineries is set within a breathtaking postcard landscape, where lush green vineyards stretch beneath the snow-capped peaks of the Swiss Alps.
The winery itself is contemporary and elegantly designed, with a clean architectural style that reveals little of its winemaking purpose. Surrounded by majestic mountains blanketed in snow year-round, the vineyards are planted on exceptionally steep slopes, making mechanical harvesting impossible. Access to the vines is provided by a unique vineyard lift—a large cable-operated platform that transports workers up and down the mountainside. Every stage of vineyard work is carried out entirely by hand, demanding both skill and physical endurance.

St. Jodern Kellerei cultivates several grape varieties, but its signature grape is Heida, internationally known as Savagnin (and related to the Traminer family, including Gewürztraminer). While the variety is often associated with aromatic and sweet or off-dry wines, here it expresses itself in an entirely different way. Grown at high altitude on rocky soils in a cool alpine climate, Heida develops vibrant acidity, making it particularly well suited for the production of sparkling wines. The grapes are harvested early to preserve their freshness and natural acidity.

Tasting Notes – St. Jodern Heida Chatouille Extra Brut
Produced using the Traditional Method (Méthode Champenoise), this elegant sparkling wine delivers a festive experience for both the eye and the palate. Made exclusively from Heida grapes, it showcases the variety’s excellent acidity together with rich aromatic complexity.
The wine displays a golden hue with subtle green reflections. The bouquet reveals layers of exotic tropical fruit, vanilla, and honey. Full-bodied and beautifully structured, it finishes with a long, precise, and persistent aftertaste. Champagne in every sense—except for the name.
Recommended serving temperature: 6–8°C (43–46°F).
