Erongo Mountain Winery, Namibia
Namibia is one of Africa’s most fascinating destinations—a vast country of dramatic geology, extreme climate variations, and endless white sand dunes. A paradise for discerning travelers, it offers breathtaking landscapes and unique cultural experiences. Near the Erongo Mountains, on the banks of the Omaruru River, lies the charming town of Omaruru, a vibrant center of art, culture, and local gastronomy. The surrounding region is also home to several wineries.
The story of Erongo Mountain Winery begins with Wolfgang and Esther Kohl, who immigrated from Germany and purchased a 3,500-dunam (approximately 865-acre) estate. Their original plan was to cultivate olive trees, but harsh winter conditions destroyed the young saplings. Rather than giving up, they made a life-changing decision: replacing the olive groves with vineyards.
Their first wine, produced from the 2014 vintage and released in 2016, was met with encouraging success. Since then, the couple has continued refining their craft, producing increasingly impressive wines each year. More recently, they have expanded their portfolio to include locally produced whisky and a variety of other premium spirits.

Alongside its growing reputation for wine and whisky, the winery also operates a fine-dining restaurant where guests enjoy a creative fusion of German and French culinary traditions.

The Wine: Namibian Kiss is a dry red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, crafted from grapes grown in vineyards surrounding the winery. Aged for ten months, it displays a deep, vibrant crimson color with remarkable body and presence.
The wine is rich and powerful, offering notes of blackcurrant (cassis) and toasted almonds, elegantly framed by subtle oak. Smooth and well-balanced, it is a versatile companion for both meat and fish dishes.
Recommended serving temperature: 14–16°C.
