The Japanese company Sailor, renowned for crafting luxurious writing instruments inspired by the history, heritage, and art of the Land of the Rising Sun, has launched a new pen in its “King of Pens” collection. This time, it’s a limited edition from the Wabi Sabi series—a special spiritual concept from ancient Japan that blends the essence of two values: “Wabi,” which evokes tranquility, quietness, and simplicity; and “Sabi,” representing the visual beauty and value of humble, natural, and imperfect things. This combination, according to Japanese aesthetics, expresses acceptance of the flow of life.
The collection includes pens flowing in two colors, green and red, each in a numbered limited edition of 88 units. These pens were designed by the Japanese artist Wajyo Shimomura, using a complex technique that advances the art of Urushi (Japanese lacquerware involving colored wood prints with glue and copper dust, creating a lacquer-like appearance). One of the meticulous design goals was to give the pen a “blurred” appearance while maintaining the principles of Urushi. The pen body is made of ebonite (a hard rubber-like material), with a 21-karat gold nib identified with Sailor.
The company also emphasizes practicality, including the ability to adjust the nib for pressure and ink flow according to user preferences. A special adapter is included to fill ink from any ink bottle of another pen brand. Another option is to use Sailor’s disposable ink cartridges, available in over twenty colors. The price of the pen is €2,700.
