Rustenberg Wines, South Africa
Near the city of Stellenbosch, the wine capital of South Africa, nestled against the slopes of a mountain, lies a picturesque winery that, from a distance, appears to be embraced by the mountain itself. That mountain, Simonsberg, serves as a natural ecological guardian, protecting both the surrounding landscape and the estate. The winery is renowned for its peaceful setting, where vineyards stretch right up to the cellar buildings—a hallmark of many South African wineries, including the historic Rustenberg Wines.

The estate was founded in 1682 by Roelof Pasman, who arrived from the village of Meurs on the banks of the Rhine in Germany, bringing with him basic knowledge of viticulture and winemaking. He built a simple winery typical of the period: a low building with wide doors that allowed freshly harvested grapes to be brought directly into the barrel room. Rather than resembling a traditional winery, the structure looked like a large Dutch farmhouse, similar to those built by the first Dutch settlers in South Africa—a striking white building with a steep grey roof standing proudly against the dark mountain backdrop.

Over the centuries, the estate changed hands several times until 1941, when it was acquired by Peter and Pamela Barlow. The Barlow family continues to own and manage Rustenberg today, preserving its rich heritage while embracing modern winemaking techniques. It remains a family-run estate where tradition and innovation work hand in hand.

Flagship Wine – Rustenberg Stellenbosch John X Merriman
The estate’s flagship wine, Rustenberg Stellenbosch John X Merriman, is a dry red blend composed primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, complemented by Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. The wine is matured for 20 months in oak barrels, resulting in a powerful, well-structured expression with remarkable depth and presence. It displays pronounced toasted oak, hints of olive and green herbal notes, ripe red fruit, and firm yet refined tannins.
