Luxury watchmaker Ulysse Nardin unveils the Freak S, a bold and visionary addition to its iconic Freak collection, originally launched in the early 2000s.
Limited to just 75 pieces worldwide, this avant-garde timepiece draws inspiration from the brightest stars in the cosmos.
Its futuristic dial design evokes the silhouette of a spaceship, complete with twin synchronized “reactors”.
Housed in a 45mm case crafted from titanium, ceramic, and 5N rose gold, the Freak S pushes the boundaries of contemporary haute horlogerie with its self-winding movement.
The original Freak models were pioneers in integrating silicon components into mechanical watchmaking, a revolutionary move at the time.
In the current Freak S, those silicon components, including the two exposed carousel-mounted balance wheels, are now coated with synthetic diamond, enhancing both durability and performance.
This crownless timepiece is set via the rotating bezel, while the caseback serves as the winding mechanism.
It offers a 72-hour power reserve and features a fully exposed movement, viewable from both front and back, showcasing the meticulous engineering and technical artistry within.
At its heart lies the world’s first dual inclined oscillator with a differential.
The system comprises two balances, each inclined at a 20-degree angle on separate planes, rotating in opposite directions within the carousel, a hallmark of the Freak line.
These balances are stabilized by gold bridges and connected through a differential mechanism that allows each to compensate for the other’s timing deviations.
The result is maximum precision, achieved through a sophisticated automatic winding system that offers greater energy efficiency compared to traditional setups.
Bottom line: Complex in its Execution, Futuristic in its Vision
