Montegrappa Raffaello 500: A Renaissance in Your Hand
To honor 500 years since the death of Raphael, Italian penmaker Montegrappa created a rare fountain pen: the Raffaello 500th Anniversary Edition.
The brand made only 25 pens, in five different designs. Each one shows a hand-painted miniature of a famous Raphael painting—like the Madonna della Seggiola or the Sistine Madonna.
These pens combine celluloid and sterling silver, and each one has an 18k gold nib engraved with Raphael’s face.
Italian artist Alessandra Malesan painted the miniatures by hand. She used fine micro-brushes, a method usually reserved for museum work. It’s the first time Montegrappa uses this kind of detail in a writing instrument.
Inspired by Raphael’s School of Athens, each pen includes silver details with a bold, geometric design.
