Namiki Emperor Urushi Vermilion – The Return of Japanese Tradition
The Emperor Urushi Vermilion fountain pen by the Japanese writing instruments brand Namiki (owned by the Pilot Corporation) is a true masterpiece of traditional Japanese artistry, seamlessly blending classical design with ancient lacquer techniques.
This model revives the legendary No. 50 Jumbo, an iconic writing instrument from the 1930s and one of the pioneering designs in the realm of oversized fountain pens. The pen is coated with natural Urushi lacquer, a material the Japanese have used for thousands of years to protect valuable objects from humidity and environmental wear.
The lacquer application is a lengthy and meticulous process, involving multiple layers and careful charcoal polishing, carried out according to the traditional Roiro Urushi Shiage technique. The result is a deep, radiant gloss and an exceptionally smooth, tactile finish.
Another distinctive feature is the eyedropper filling system, which allows ink to be filled directly into the pen’s barrel. This system offers a generous ink capacity and incorporates an advanced mechanism designed to prevent leakage.
Price: approximately €1,800.
