Swiss luxury writing instrument maker Caran d’Ache pays tribute to the world of high-end Swiss watchmaking—Haute Horlogerie—with its exceptional 1010 Horlogerie limited-edition pen.
Produced in a series of just 500 pieces, the pen’s design draws direct inspiration from the intricate components of a mechanical watch. Its structure echoes elements such as visible movement mechanics, sapphire-like windows reminiscent of watch crystals, and a dial-inspired aesthetic that evokes the precision of fine timepieces.
The production process is remarkably complex, incorporating traditional decorative and finishing techniques associated with both watchmaking and haute craftsmanship. These include guilloché engraving (a refined ornamental pattern resembling interwoven ribbons), precision engraving, hand polishing, lacquer application, and advanced PVD treatment.
Additional artisanal steps elevate the pen further, including diamond polishing and the careful setting of gemstones. The nib is crafted from 18-karat gold with a rhodium coating, entirely hand-finished and engraved with gear motifs, reinforcing the horological theme. The cap is silver-plated and finished with rhodium for a refined, enduring sheen.
