Montblanc, the Swiss giant of watches and luxury goods, also designs exceptional pens, sometimes in collaboration with the names that have shaped the world of writing. As part of their series dedicated to famous writers, Montblanc released a tribute edition to Robert Louis Stevenson, the Scottish writer and poet responsible for monumental works such as “Treasure Island” and “Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde”. Stevenson suffered from tuberculosis for most of his life but continued to travel and write about his adventures. In his later years, he moved to the Samoan Islands where his health improved due to the tropical climate but passed away at the age of only 44.
The pens are offered in four versions, both fountain and ballpoint, illustrating the life of the writer and corresponding (two possible meanings) with his works. Dedicated to “Treasure Island,” these pens feature a telescope-shaped emblem symbolizing sailors and pirates, with the lower engraving resembling a spyglass opening. They include elements shaped like skulls and crossed bones, akin to the famous pirate flag, Jolly Roger, which appears when the pen is opened instead of the British Red Ensign, to symbolize the capture of the ship by pirates. Additional elements: The inscription “Tusitala” on the cap, representing the nickname Stevenson received from the Samoan residents meaning “storyteller”; and the inscription “Hispaniola,” the name of the ship with three masts that sailed to Treasure Island.
The pens are crafted from luxurious metals with a glossy black lacquer finish. This creates a contrast with the pen’s cap, plated in gold and adorned with motifs such as a treasure chest and wind rose.
