When Italy Meets Japan
In 1939, Italian writing instrument maker Montegrappa introduced the original Ammiraglio—widely regarded as the first European pen to feature a nib produced at the iconic Sakata-Year Factory in Hiroshima, Japan, just years before the atomic bomb changed the city forever.
The modern Ammiraglio (“Admiral”) revives this historic model, faithfully reinterpreting its distinctive design. The pen features a meticulously handcrafted reconstruction of the original aesthetic, enhanced with sterling silver accents and a finely engraved celluloid body adorned with the brand’s emblem in a luminous deep blue.
Equipped with a patented piston-filling system, the pen blends heritage with technical innovation. Its nib has been re-engineered to align with the design language of Sailor pens—among the most renowned instruments produced by the Japanese factory. Notably, the nib boasts an exceptional width of 6 mm, requiring a complete redesign of internal components and the use of rare 18-karat gold.
The result is a unique cultural and technical fusion—where Italian design elegance meets Japanese precision craftsmanship.
