The new Richard Lange Jumping Seconds by A. Lange & Söhne is an exceptional example of the fusion between traditional watchmaking and technical innovation. It marks the fourth edition in the brand’s celebrated Jumping Seconds series and is available in two versions: a black dial paired with 750 white gold, and a limited edition of 100 pieces featuring a dial crafted from 750 pink gold housed in a white-gold case.
At the heart of the watch is a hand-wound in-house caliber with a 42-hour power reserve. Measuring 39.9 mm in diameter, the timepiece incorporates three highly sophisticated mechanisms. The first, naturally, is the jumping seconds complication itself. Instead of sweeping smoothly, the seconds hand advances in precise one-second increments—sixty distinct steps per minute—allowing for exceptionally accurate time reading.
The watch also features a constant-force escapement, which ensures a stable flow of energy to the balance wheel, thereby enhancing chronometric precision. Another key feature is the zero-reset mechanism: when the crown is pulled out, the seconds hand instantly resets to zero and the movement stops immediately, enabling perfect synchronization with a reference time source.
The dial design is inspired by the historic Chronometer No. 93 from the 18th century. It follows a classic regulator-style layout, with separate displays for hours, minutes, and seconds. In this configuration, the prominent seconds display occupies the upper portion of the dial, while the hours and minutes are shown in two overlapping sub-dials below. A small triangular indicator at the point of overlap serves as a low power reserve warning.
The movement’s meticulous finishing, including the hand-engraved balance cock, can be admired through the sapphire crystal caseback.
